When we consider both urban and rural areas, it’s possible to think about border spaces as transition and contamination places between inside and outside, urban and external landscape, man and territory.

A relational process which is at the same time real and symbolic, implying a frequented and changeable space. In this perspective, the urban border can become a metaphor of the final changing, of the soundscape transformation into crossbreeding sceneries, in which the distinction among areas and between places and non-places is undefinable.

“Suoni dal confine” a new project curated by Leandro Pisano wants to describe those transformations and transition that traditional soundscape has suffered in the last years. To do so we merge together different level of arts (live performances, installations, talks and conference) and we move away from a simplistic and nostalgic interpretation of the soundscape itself. By reading the boundaries of a territory we focus more on its acoustic symbology, considering it not a de-limited element anymore rather an interaction and at the same time a relationship system among ever shifting parts: “border areas are spaces of dynamism, of conflict, of contradiction and mediation in which the apparent incoherence and extraneousness of certain sounds become the peculiar brand new” (Enrico Coniglio).

“Suoni dal confine” comes into being with an event at Spazio Thetis (Fondazione Thetis) in Venezia, on 20th of May 2011. An Ufficio Bifolco production. This movie was produced during 2011 by Ufficio Bifolco (ufficiobifolco.it). Film editing, camera work and postproduction: Antonello Carbone. Subtitles ENG/ITA: Anna Palmer

Programme:

Enrico Coniglio, “Porto Marghera e la crisi del sacro”
It’s a live performance based on a series of field recording sessions conducted in the former industrial area of Porto Marghera, focusing on some environmental recordings mixed, processed in real time and aiming to delve into loss of identity theme connected to productive situation of Venice during last century, if compared with the recent global crisis.

Yasuhiro Morinaga, “The rural soundscape of Irpinia”
This live performance is based on some materials taken from the field trip at high altitude on the Podolian pastures which Yasuhiro Morinaga has conducted during a residency project on the mountains of Irpinia, a rural region in South Italy, in the days before the 2010 edition of the new media art festival Interferenze. A deep immersion in the rural territory of Irpinia, capturing sound from the abstract landscape of a peripheral and evocative land.

Leandro Pisano, “Il terzo paesaggio sonoro: soundscape dai confini”
During this talk, the author examinates some projects related with the sonic exploration of rural and urban territories, aiming at experiencing in a different way the places that nowadays are excluded from the development process of the contemporary western society: not only rural areas, but also little and invisible spaces.
